TEMPE - An unidentified man was found floating Wednesday in Tempe Town Lake, believed to be the second drowning there in recent months.

A jogger noticed a body near the Rural Road bridge about 10 a.m. and called 911.

Firefighters pulled the body from the water five minutes later, said Officer Brandon Banks, a police spokesman.

The man was wearing only jeans and had no identification. He is believed to have been in his 50s.

There are no obvious signs of foul play, police said.

Drowning is uncommon at Tempe Town Lake, said Phil Rohe, a senior inspector with the Tempe Fire Department.

Rohe said the water, which is off limits to swimmers except during special events such as triathlons, is about 65 to 70 degrees and wouldn't pose a problem for someone who knows how to swim.

"You could stay in that water for quite a while without any problem," Rohe said.

And if a swimmer was near the shore, it's not too tough to get out, he said. There are steps below the water level.

"Depending on where you are at, if you can get a hold of a wall, you can move yourself down to get to a step," he said.

On Feb. 14, 23-year-old John Rose-Palermo, a former Arizona State University student, dived off the Rural Road Bridge and drowned.

Firefighters have recovered five bodies from the lake since it opened in 1999.

"We want to emphasize that Town Lake is not for swimming," Banks said.
