FBI silent on why agents detained Tempe City Hall workers

Posted: Friday, October 1, 2010 3:09 pm

The FBI will not say what it is investigating at Tempe City Hall that caused agents to detain workers for a number of hours inside the building beginning Thursday morning.

About the time City Hall, 31 E. Fifth St. opened, FBI agents in partnership with Tempe police entered the building, had workers pull the curtains and asked them to turn off their cell phones.

But an FBI spokesman told the Tribune on Friday what they are not investigating:

“This does not have anything to do with a public corruption-type of case, but this is an ongoing matter,” said Manuel Johnson, an FBI spokesman.

Tempe city officials would not answer any questions about the incident, other than to confirm there was an incident involving the FBI.

Tempe City Hall workers were detained in the City Council chambers this morning during a sweep by FBI agents, city officials confirmed.

City manager Charlie Meyer confirmed that the sweep was conducted but declined to comment further.

The FBI declined to comment except to say that the City Hall was not the target of the investigation. Tempe Police spokesman Steve Carbajal said the sweep was carried out in conjunction with Tempe police, but he declined further comment.

The Arizona Republic was tipped off by an anonymous caller this afternoon. The caller said federal agents kept a number of employees in the City Council chambers for about two-and-a-half hours. The curtains were drawn and employees were told to turn off their cellphones, the caller said.
