Three great things about Neil Giuliano's Tempe home:
1) The loft look: Giuliano's patio home was built in the early 1970s. Four years ago, the previous owner gutted it, four years ago, turned several small rooms into one large living room, created an elevated kitchen, raised the ceilings, and installed new air-conditioning ductwork, leaving and left it exposed. The floors were stripped to the original concrete and also left exposed. The finished look is industrial with a little sense of hominess. That's how I like to think of it, the soon-to-be ex-mayor says. says the mayor, whose term ends in July.
2) Illuminated glass block: At the entry, an entire wall is made with opaque glass block. Colored floodlights directed onto the glass from the open-air atrium on the other side give the entire wall a rich, colorful after-dark glow.
3) The men's room: The main guest bathroom has a fun, funky design patterned after a commercial restroom. It starts with an illuminated sign above the door that says Men, continues with lots of white tile, and really takes an unusual turn with a urinal and a commode with a lidless, open-front seat.
