Two more robbed as Tempe holdups climb

Tempe’s robbers struck two more victims in the past two days, bringing the total number of robberies over the last six weeks to about 14.

Police have distributed fliers to Arizona State University students, warning them of the recent rash of robberies, and have created a task force to catch the offenders. Many of the victims are men and women in their early 20s.

“I still walk home because I work in the library,” said Araceli Acuna, 20, of Tempe. “But I usually ask one of my friends to come pick me up if it’s late.”

Most recently, two men robbed a man at gunpoint near 1101 S. Rural Road, making off with his property and car, police said. The man was not injured.

A police sergeant located the vehicle at 2045 S. McClintock Drive, established a perimeter and used K-9 units and a helicopter, but could not locate the robbers.

One robber is described as black, about 23 years old, 6 feet tall, with a muscular build and facial hair stubble. He wore a green basketball jersey with a white emblem on the front and dark pants. The other robber is Hispanic; the victim couldn’t recall additional details.

Another robbery occurred Saturday about 11 a.m. at the Roadrunner Gas Station, 1350 W. Broadway Road when two men used a gun to force an attendant to hand over money from the cash register, police said.

The robbers left the store eastbound toward an apartment complex at 1330 W. Broadway Road, but police could not find them. They are described as black and 5 feet 8 inches tall. One had a thin mustache and wore a green baseball cap, white T-shirt and khaki pants. The other had a thin build, medium-length curly hair and wore a white Tshirt and jeans.
