Tempe Town Lake

It ain't even close to the Grand Canyon!

Dear Ms. Nanez:

We were invited to share our thoughts on the Tempe Town Toilet (er Town Lake). Here are mine:

First, I don't for a moment believe that it's second only to the Grand Canyon as the most visited tourist attraction in Arizona. Our tourists aren't quite as stupid as that, and many of them come from places that have real lakes, not small useless resevoirs held in place by inflated rubber dams.

Second, swimming has always been forbidden except for a few special events, so what's the point of having a lake we're not allowed to enter?

Third, it doesn't provide drinking water or generate hydroelectric power like a real resevoir, nor is it good for flood control. It simply wastes water in a desert climate.

Fourth, there was nothing wrong with the riverbed the way it was. I have fond memories of exploring it during my undergraduate days at Arizona State University. Now that the lake is gone, take away the stupid no trespassing signs and let people enjoy the riverbed again.

Sincerely,

Kevin Walsh
