Tempe officials consider banning EdgeFest

MESA, Ariz. - Officials in the Arizona college city of Tempe are for the first time discussing whether to ban an event from a lakeside park for its rowdiness.

Police say bands screamed vulgar lyrics, concertgoers drank too much and the smell of marijuana was "pervasive" at this year's EdgeFest, an all-day concert held Sept. 30.

Bands that played at the event include Incubus, 30 Seconds to Mars, Authority Zero and Sparta. Promoters had expected 10,000 people, but twice as many showed up, depleting water and food supplies.

In a scathing report on EdgeFest, police officer Bill Rogers recommended the city ban EdgeFest and similar events.

City officials have discussed not letting the event return despite its popularity. That would be a first for events at Tempe Beach Park, a sprawling lakeside area just north of Arizona State University.

"We've really never been in this position before," said Travis Dray, deputy director of parks and recreation.

City officials who oversee events at the park expect to make a decision within two weeks, Dray said.

Don Karner, who operates the Rio Lago Cruise Company at the lake, said he doesn't want EdgeFest to come back. He said he was astounded that his clients, primarily families with children, had to walk by profane singers, barely clothed dancing women and partygoers who threw bottles into the crowd.

"The air was full of bottles and every other kind of debris," he said.

Nat Galvin, general manager of radio station KEDJ, the event's promoter, wrote in an e-mail that he wants to fix the problems to keep EdgeFest in Tempe.

"We would hope that Tempe would give us the opportunity to rectify those challenges to the best of our ability," he wrote.
