Tempe approves contract to continue photo enforcement

Drivers, take heed: Those traffic cameras are still watching you around Tempe.

Thursday, the City Council approved another year's contact with Redflex Traffic Systems, whose cameras around town can cost drivers nearly $200 per citation.

The good news for residents is that a chunk of each ticket goes to Tempe, to the tune of millions over the previous three years of the contract. Redflex stands to earn up to $4.2 million a year, garnering $35.50 for each citation paid.

The contract will be the fourth year of a possible five years with the company. This year's contact will see no change in rates.

Though Tempe is apparently still gung ho about Redflex, the Arizona Department of Public Safety recently decided to let the company's contract expire.

DPS Lt. Col. Jack Hegarty sent a letter to Redflex, the photo-enforcement system's operator, in April letting the company know that the state would not renew its 2-year-old contract.

The cameras had snapped more than 2 million times statewide during an 18-month span from September 2008 through the end of March.

Only about 30 percent of those citations were paid, generating about $63.5 million that went into a fund controlled by the Arizona Legislature.
